Groote Post Reserve Sauvignon Blanc and Reserve Pinot Noir voted among South Africa’s Top 100 Wines at the 2013 Top 100 SA Wine Challenge

Groote post

The Groote Post Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2012 and Groote Post Reserve Pinot Noir 2009 have been judged among  South Africa’s ‘Top 100 Wines’ at the 2013 Top 100 SA Wine Challenge, an objective, independent and professional rating of South Africa’s finest wines.

Groote Post, the beautiful historic Cape West Coast farm, owned by the Pentz family, has its vineyard plantings, overlooking the icy Atlantic Ocean, on the cool sea- and south-facing upper slopes of the Kapokberg in the Darling Hills, an established prime wine-growing area.

Groote Post Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2012

Groote Post’s Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2012, with an established award-winning pedigree, displays the typical Darling minerality that makes this area’s sauvignon blancs stand out. It is stacked with flavours of granadilla, green fig and green pepper, has a full and lingering finish and is a perfect food match. The Reserve Sauvignon Blanc calls for careful selection along the entire winemaking path, from the vineyards to the cellar.

The Groote Post Reserve Sauvignon Blanc 2012 is widely available nationally at leading retailers and restaurants. Retail price: ±R120

Groote Post Reserve Pinot Noir 2009

The 2009 Groote Post Reserve Pinot Noir is a more European-style Pinot Noir than previous vintages, according to winemaker, Lukas Wentzel. He points to suitably restrained plum and raspberry notes with savoury, dried-beef flavours. A subtle hint of forest floor and mushrooms underpins the earthy characteristic of this Pinot Noir, yielding a refined and soft wine with silky smooth, finely-defined tannins. Judicious oaking (12 months in 2nd fill and older 500-litre French oak barrels) adds elegant vanilla and spice to a medley of dark berry flavours. The Groote Post Reserve Pinot Noir 2009 was the only Pinot Noir to receive Gold at the 2012 Veritas Awards (no Double Golds were awarded).

South Africa’s 2013 Wine Tourism Handbook: Enjoying Wine at the Source

wine Tourism handbook logo

The eighth edition of the popular Wine Tourism Handbook is now available for sale both in bookshops and online. This image-rich, full-colour, comprehensive guide to the farms, restaurants, accommodation venues and activities found in South Africa’s Winelands is one of Wine Tourism South Africa’s (WTSA) most prestigious products. It works in tandem with WTSA’s other exciting social media and online platforms and campaigns to drive interest in the varied wine tourism offerings of the country.

The 2013 edition boasts several key refinements to previous editions but retains its unique core by offering a comprehensive list of farms, complete with opening hours, contact details and easy-to-read maps as well as a number of carefully selected destinations for dining, staying and playing!

This year, the Gourmand Award-winning publication offers independent reviews of Winelands restaurants ranging from delis to five-star establishments as well as route-by-route reviews of boutique wineries (those that make less than 5 000 cases of wine a year) and it showcases the winners of the popular Klink Awards – launched by Wine Tourism South Africa in 2012. More information can be found on the Klink Awards – the first consumer-driven, interactive wine tourism competition in the country – on www.winetourismsouthafrica.co.za. In addition, wine route information has been updated with editorial reflecting the inherent character of each route and photographs capturing the scenic beauty of each region.

As wine tourism is about the entire experience – wine, food, people, activity and place – detailed listings are offered for the best places to eat, stay and play – whether that is casual cafés or fine dining, rustic cottages or five star hotels, a wine picnic on the river or helicopter flip over the vineyards. The Handbook is an indispensible companion to anyone looking to have a fun, meaningful and in-depth experience when visiting the country’s wine regions.

The publisher, Monika Elias, notes, “Wine tourism is a global phenomenon and it is a growing market, but we are fast getting the impression that here in South Africa, we do it rather well, perhaps better than most. Our handbook is a reflection of this burgeoning market”.

The Wine Tourism Handbook is #notjustwine, it is the complete Winelands experience in one colourful and beautifully-produced guide and at just R99.00 it offers tremendous value for money! The 288-page 2013 Wine Tourism Handbook can be ordered online or downloaded from www.winetourismsouthafrica.co.za and is available in all good bookstores.

Groote Post’s 2012 Riesling A Winner

Groote post

The only Riesling to be nominated for a 2013 Platter’s 5 Star Rating

“It will always be a challenge to make good Riesling in South Africa because of our climate, but I have always thought Riesling could do well at Groote Post.  Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir do very well on our farm, and they prefer colder climates, so why shouldn’t Riesling have the same potential?” These prophetic words from Groote Post winemaker Lukas Wentzel have finally come to fruition.

The recently released 2012 Groote Post Riesling was rated one of only two 4½ star Rieslings in the 2013 Platter’s SA Wine Guide. And it was the only Riesling nominated for Platter’s pinnacle 5 star rating. Top ratings for Riesling are few and far between in South Africa, with only 4 Rieslings, all semi-sweet, ever having  received 5 star Platter’s ratings in the 34-year history of the guide.

“The 2012 Riesling is our third attempt, and this time round, we are confident that we have produced the style of Riesling that we want to pursue. With Riesling you need to build character and complexity with a high acidity and significant residual sugar to give the wine some depth. I believe that we have achieved this with the 2012, which has a residual sugar of 21g/l and a high acidity which combine beautifully.  We have added a delicious semi-sweet wine to our portfolio and the alcohol is nice and low at 11.5%”, says Lukas Wentzel.

This Riesling was grafted onto Cabernet Sauvignon that was struggling to ripen because the vineyard block is south-facing, east-west row direction, and therefore has a cooler microclimate which suits Riesling. Groote Post were lucky that 2012 was a moderate year so it was less challenging to get the harvest date right for the Riesling and they were able to capture the flavours they were looking for.

According to the Platter’s 2013 edition, the 2012 Groote Post Riesling’s “nervy tension shows skilful winemaking to capture such intensity, purity…. Quince and ginger, a tangy texture as the high acid and 21g/l sugar combine, leaving an extended fruitiness.”

In the cellar the ‘skilful’ winemaker, Lukas Wentzel, says he treated the Riesling much the same as any other white wine, except he stopped the fermentation by cooling the wine down to 5°C.  The wine was kept on the lees and stirred regularly.

“We are still learning everyday when it comes to winemaking, especially with Riesling. I believe we are almost there and that Groote Post will produce one of South Africa’s finest Rieslings”, concludes Lukas.

The 2012 Groote Post Riesling is a typical young Riesling, with none of that oily terpene character yet. It is fragrant with wafts of honeysuckle and jasmine. The palate is fresh and spicy and somewhat exotic with gorgeous apple and apricot notes and a touch of ginger. Semi-sweet and well rounded, it displays the cool climate aspects of Darling.

The 2012 Groote Post Riesling is available nationally at leading restaurants and fine wine merchants, retailing at approximately R70.

Andrea Mullineux, award winning winemaker of Mullineux Family Wines in the Swartland, has become the 5th woman to be inducted into the Cape Winemakers Guild since its inception in 1982.

The only new member to join the Guild this year, Andrea is a formidable winemaker.

“Andrea is a forward thinking winemaker with a proven track record of producing exceptional wines of the highest quality,” says Vice Chairman Andries Burger, who believes her international experience as a University of California BSC graduate and numerous harvests in France and California, coupled with her vast technical knowledge and expertise, make her a great addition to the Guild.

Currently one of two women in the 46 member strong Guild, Andrea joins Rianie Strydom, who has been a Guild member since 2010. The other women who have been members of the Guild during its illustrious 30 year history, are Janey Muller of Lemberg, Louise Hofmeyr of Welgemeend and Norma Ratcliffe of Warwick Wine Estate, who is still actively involved in the Guild as honorary member.

CWG Chairman Jeff Grier and Andrea Mullineux

Andrea has excelled both locally and internationally boasting no less than seven Platter’s 5-Star wines since starting Mullineux Family Wines with her husband, Chris, in 2007. Her wines are rated consistently over 90 points across all vintages by authoritative international publications such as Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator. Andrea is also an active flag bearer of the Swartland wine region as founding member of Swartland Independent and committee member of the Swartland Revolution, the appellation’s major annual wine event.

The Management Committee of the Cape Winemakers Guild also enters 2013 with a few changes. Jeff Grier of Villiera succeeds Louis Strydom as Chairman, supported by new Vice Chairman, Andries Burger of Paul Cluver. David Finlayson of Edgebaston serves another year as Treasurer and Frans Smit of Spier remains as CWG Cellarmaster. Louis Nel joins the committee as Workshop Cellarmaster charged with managing the Guild’s technical workshops.

Membership of the Cape Winemakers Guild is by invitation only and is extended to winemakers who have been responsible for the production of outstanding wines for a minimum of five years, and who continue to do so.

The Guild is committed, through its members, to innovation and consistent production of high quality, limited edition wines and prides itself on setting new benchmarks for the South African wine industry.

In conjunction with Nedbank, the Guild runs various upliftment programmes in the winelands such as bursaries for secondary and tertiary education and the Protégé Programme, a mentorship programme for young, aspirant winemakers.

Groote Post Sauvignon Blanc 2012 – The Perfect Wine For A Girls Night Out

Groote post

Groote Post’s 2012 Sauvignon Blanc is the ideal wine for a ‘Girls Night Out’, according to the Ultra Liquors 100 Women 100 Wines 2012 Competition, a noteworthy compliment considering that ‘The most important market for wines in South Africa is women’, as noted by retail guru Mark Norrish, GM of Ultra Liquors.

This latest award for Groote Post’s Sauvignon Blanc 2012 follows hot-on-the-heels of a Top 10 placement at the 2012 FNB Top 10 Sauvignon Blanc Awards and a Gold medal at the 2012 Michelangelo International Wine Awards.

Groote Post’s winemaker, Lukas Wentzel, describes the wine as, “An explosion of fruit driven by lime, gooseberry and kiwi fruit, and underpinned by a thread of minerality. A lively wine, with intense flavours, that has a long finish, making this a crowd-pleaser for any occasion.” And a crowd pleaser it certainly is.

100 South African women, a diverse group of all creeds, colours, backgrounds and tastes in wine, gathered recently at a fun, informal occasion at the Table Bay Hotel, to sip, swirl and taste their way through 200 wines (including whites, reds, blends, varietals, MCC’s, rose’s, blushes, sparkling, sweet, dry, value for money as well as top end wines) in order to choose their top 100 wines and select their favourites to enjoy at 10 different social occasions.

“It gives us a lot of pleasure to know that this rainbow cross-section of sassy and adventurous wine-loving ladies would desire our 2012 Sauvignon Blanc as their vinous date for a ladies night out, a much-appreciated thumbs up indeed from this influential segment of the wine-buying market”, enthused Groote Post co-owner, Nick Pentz.

Groote Post’s Sauvignon Blancs are their biggest sellers and have become synonymous with this historic cool-climate West Coast farm ever since their highly-rated maiden 1999 vintage Sauvignon Blanc was launched.

The Groote Post Sauvignon Blanc 2012 is widely available nationally at leading retailers and restaurants and retails nationally at approximately R75.

Groote Post, the beautiful, historic Cape West Coast farm, with a rustic, rural atmosphere, undulating hills, vast open spaces and warm country hospitality, is only an hour’s drive from Cape Town. 2012 Alexanderfontein Whites Released By Ormonde Private Cellar

Alexander Fontein logo

Pioneering Darling wine estate continues to satisfy its many loyal customers

Alexanderfontein Wines is the lifestyle brand within the Ormonde Private Cellar collection and comprises three whites and three reds, all single-varietal wines. The current releases are the 2012 vintages of Alexanderfontein Sauvignon Blanc; Alexanderfontein Chenin Blanc; and Alexanderfontein Chardonnay (unwooded).

The Alexanderfontein wines are crafted for unpretentious pleasure and enjoyment. For more than a decade Alexanderfontein has developed a wide range of customers through their high-quality, aromatic and fruit-driven wines, at prices that have consistently over delivered on value. With their full fruity flavours and freshness, created by the natural harmony between the fruit and natural acidity, these distinctive wines are typical of the Darling area. Trade winds blow from the Atlantic Ocean, cooling vineyards to create ideal conditions for optimum flavour and balance. Many of Ormonde’s vineyards overlook the sea, the closest vineyards being only 7km from the coast.

The family of Ormonde Private Cellar’s owner, Theo Basson, are deeply rooted in the history of Darling. Their ancestors trace back to the French Huguenots, who arrived in South Africa in the late 17th century. Theo’s father, Nico, returned to Darling in 1970 when he bought the farm Alexanderfontein to start a highly acclaimed dairy herd. However, with encouragement from his Stellenbosch friends, Oom Nico planted vines in Darling and supplied grapes to Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery and various other cellars in the Boland. His sauvignon blanc soon became well-known and he is considered one of Darling’s sauvignon blanc pioneers. He later bought the Ormonde farm. Today Theo owns two farms and manages the vineyards of two more, and the future generation of Bassons are playing in the vineyard, learning the craft from a young age.

2. Alexanderfontein Sauvignon Blanc
3. Alexanderfontein Chenin Blanc
4. Alexanderfontein Chardonnay

The Basson family, highly regarded grape growers, built their own 1 000-ton cellar in time for winemaker, Michiel du Toit, to make wine from the best grapes produced by the 2006 harvest. At Ormonde a ‘hands on’ approach in the vineyard and ‘hands off’ approach in the winery reflects their philosophy of allowing fruit and terroir to be fully expressed in every bottle. The modern Ormonde cellar is geared to making wine using traditional French techniques, including open fermentation, plunging, racking, barrel ageing and blending. Only oak barrels are used, no chips and staves. Ormonde concentrates its efforts on 3 ranges: Alexanderfontein, Ondine and their flagship Ormonde range.

Theo honours his father’s role in establishing the brand, “The Alexanderfontein name is a tribute to my father, Nico Basson, a pioneering farmer and visionary. He set about planting sauvignon blanc (and other) vineyards in 1970 on Alexanderfontein in the Darling area, and lay the foundation for what has become the prolific wine producing region it is today.” Their first sauvignon blanc grapes went to SFW (Distell) who used them to establish one of their top sauvignon blanc labels in the early 1970s.

The quality of the sauvignon blanc grapes grown on Ormonde’s farms has been illustrated by the number of high-profile wineries that use these Darling grapes in their premium award-winning sauvignon blancs. In fact, one year, when WINE magazine still staged the Top 10 Sauvignon Blanc Challenge, several of the top ten wines were made from, or contained, Ormonde grapes.

First launched shortly after the dawning of the new millennium, Alexanderfontein Wines were an instant hit with customers, because they offered such outstanding value. Sauvignon Blanc led the way, as is so often the case these days, and the other wines in the range soon gained in popularity. The three reds in the Alexanderfontein range are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Shiraz of which the 2009 vintages are now commercially available.

Sauvignon Blanc has become the signature wine of the Darling District (Wine of Origin). As a cultivar that responds favourably to the cool growing environment of the area, it produces intense herbaceous, fruity, and aromatic wines that are a favourite among consumers. The Alexanderfontein Sauvignon Blanc is regularly awarded 3½ stars and above by Platter’s SA Wine Guide, and the 2011 vintage was also rated ‘Good value’ in the 2012 edition. The Alexanderfontein Sauvignon Blanc has also received Double Gold Veritas awards twice in the past few years.
